Club History

The Elgin County Beagle Club was founded in the year 1950 at the home of George Sherman in

Rodney, Ontario in Elgin County. This is where the name originated from. The members who founded

the club at this time were Joseph Tiede, Marg Tiede, Archie Steel, Ross Todd, George Sherman, and Clarence Ross. The club held its first Field trials at New Glasgow, Ontario until 1956 when the club moved their events to Forest, then to Dorchester, and Napier.

in 1969 the club purchased eighty-nine acres of land near Appin, Ontario. The club sold shares to the members at this time to meet the cost of buying and developing the land. It was through very hard work and many donations from the members that the clubhouse was build on these grounds. The mortgage was paid off on the property in 1980 and these shares were no longer sold. The beagle club developed a procedure that allowed the members to each get one share when they met the criteria set out by the club. Today, the members are very proud of this club and work very hard to keep it in operation.

Pictured here are some of the club members that were working hard to make some money for the club

Thames-Valley Beagle Club (TVBC)

Lloyd Willer Trial

The Thames Valley Beagle club was formed in 1939. It is one of the oldest established clubs serving the sport of Beagling in Canada. In 1959 they purchased eighty seven acres of land near the Hamlet of Napier Ont. This beautiful rolling land is bordered by the Sydenham River. Its winding creeks, thorn tree cover, and planted pines make it a true haven for all types of wildlife. After much hard work by members over the years, the grounds now consists of well groomed paths, a clubhouse, camping area, kennels etc.

Although the prime purpose of the property is the running of field trials and dog training it also lends itself to other activities. Such as hiking, bird watching, fishing, canoeing, tobogganing, and cross country skiing. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. The sport of Beagling along with the many other activities that can be enjoyed make membership in the club something for the whole family. Come join us for a day or weekend as a Beagler or just a friend of nature.

Ontario Association of Beagle Clubs (OABC)

Derby

The Ontario Association of Beagle Clubs (OABC) is made up of individual beagle clubs from Southwestern Ontario that enjoy the sport of beagling and use their Beagles for tracking cottontail rabbits. Beagle field trials originated by hunters that were looking for an activity they could be a part of and keep their small hounds in conditionn all year instead of only when hunting. Not only were they keeping their beagles in shape but they were able to create competition with friends when hunting season was closed. Field Trial competition with beagles are conducted in the spring and fall of each year in different locations across Eastern Canada. There are different formats in which the field trial competitions are conducted, large pack on hare, small pack on hare or rabbits, and brace on rabbits. There are some areas in eastern Ontario that beagles are used to trail fox. Most of these events are sanctioned by the Canadian Kennel Club and are run under their rules and regulations.

Can-Am International Beagle Club (Can-Am BC)

Karen Mitton Snow Trial

In 1985 Can-Am International Beagle Club was formed and conducted small pack trials on leased property located in Milgrove, Ontario. Can-Am shared this property with the Wentworth Beagle Club until 2001 when we moved our headquarters to Wainfleet, Ontario where we purchased our own 65 acre property. Club members from both sides of the border work together on the property top open trails, set up brush piles and feed the rabbits in the winter months so that everyone can benefit when the trials start in the spring. Can-Am International Beagle Club is officially recognized as a field trial club by the Canadian Kennel Club and is a member in good standing with the following organizations

  • The Ontario Association of Beagle clubs
  • The Ontario Sporting Dog Association
  • The United Beagle Gundog Federation

We think we have a pretty good club and welcome new members to join us in the fun of Beagling
