Club History The Elgin County Beagle Club was founded in the year 1950 at the home of George Sherman in Rodney, Ontario in Elgin County. This is where the name originated from. The members who founded the club at this time were Joseph Tiede, Marg Tiede, Archie Steel, Ross Todd, George Sherman, and Clarence Ross. The club held its first Field trials at New Glasgow, Ontario until 1956 when the club moved their events to Forest, then to Dorchester, and Napier. In 1969 the club purchased eighty-nine acres of land near Appin, Ontario. The club sold shares to the members at this time to meet the cost of buying and developing the land. It was through very hard work and many donations from the members that the clubhouse was build on these grounds. The mortgage was paid off on the property in 1980 and these shares were no longer sold. The beagle club developed a procedure that allowed the members to each get one share when they met the criteria set out by the club. Today, the members are very proud of this club and work very hard to keep it in operation.
As a result of the recent increases in
conditions, limitations and restrictions placed on this sport by the parent
Club, Elgin County has decided to make some changes for 2010. The Club has joined the Canadian Cottontail
Beagle Federation and will be running Federation Licensed Trials in the fall.
This move will significantly improve the club’s opportunities and options for
conducting Field Trials into the future. The financial and administrative
burdens placed on the club and the sport by the parent Club have lead to a
decline in entries and a decline in participation, as well, these restrictions
serve only to be a huge deterrent in this clubs events to promote participation
in the club and the sport. The Federation allows for unrestricted
participation of individuals and their dogs, regardless of residency and/or
registry (CKC, AKC, UKC), further it imposes no penalties or additional fees
for The Elgin County Beagle Club would like to
recognize those who contribute to and support this club and this sport. We hope
that you will continue to support us and the sport as we pursue the challenges
and rewards of Field Trials. We would like to extend an invitation to all
participants in this sport to join us in support of the Federation concept, to
enjoy the economic benefit, increased flexibility, greater diversity and
increased participation that will result from this initiative, while at the
same time continuing to recognize and reward the many area of accomplishments
which are associated with this sport. The Elgin County Beagle Club will be running One (1)
CKC Approved Brace Trial on April 17 & 18, 2010. The Club has chosen to award the Governor’s Trophy as
part of the Small Pack Trial in the fall. The winner from each class will compete to determine
an Absolute winner. The format will be Small Pack, the winner will receive a
special Plaque and the name of the winning hound will be added to the winners
of the Governor’s Trophy.
We want to thank all members that contribute to the success of our organization in what ever means they can. Without your contribution to the Elgin County Beagle Club we would not be what we are today
